Revolutionising offshore comfort with PWS Turbine Toilet installed on Aberdeen Wind Farm

Author: Douglas Shearer

Pegasus Welfare Solutions (PWS), an OEG Group company, has successfully delivered welfare solutions to Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm as part of a 3-year service agreement with Vattenfall. This was made possible by the collaboration between Vattenfall and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult that aims to demonstrate innovative technologies for the offshore renewable industry.

PWS was awarded a contract to supply welfare solutions to Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm in the form of the company’s patented In-Tower Turbine toilet units, which have been installed in all 11 of the turbines at the wind farm site.

The contract includes a 3-year service agreement for the welfare units, which covers on-site training with offshore technicians for both installation and maintenance of the units, supply of consumables and servicing of the units.

Dan Greeves, Director, UK Renewables at OEG Renewables and Managing Director of PWS, said:

“The award of this agreement for Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm was a milestone for PWS, as this is the first project that has purchased the In-Tower Turbine units and installed them as a permanent fixture in each of the turbines. The learnings from this project have been critical in improving both the product and the accompanying service we provide.”

Steven Wares, Operations and Maintenance Manager at Vattenfall said:

“Welfare of our staff on site is really important to Vattenfall so I’m delighted we’ve been able to partner with PWS to help deliver additional amenities when our teams are working offshore. There are clear operational and health and safety benefits of having toilets on the turbines so it’s great to have been part of this project.”

The toilet units were designed as an answer to the lack of welfare facilities on offshore wind farm sites; the presence of a welfare unit inside the turbine eliminates the need to return to a vessel to use the onboard facilities, resulting in a reduced number of ladder climbs and an increase in both safety and productivity.

Alongside the essential welfare benefits the units provide, they also offer a more appealing workplace for women. The Offshore Wind Sector Deal has a target of 33% of people in the industry being women by 2042; the innovative solution PWS provides aims to help the industry achieve this goal to diversify the offshore workforce.

The welfare units were installed on Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm in early 2023 and are designed to operate for the lifespan of the turbines.
